Cover 3 Lock is a zone defense out of the Dime 2-3-6 Will set that drops three deep defenders and locks four underneath defenders into short zones with man-match responsibilities. The diagram shows the two outside corners and the deep safety carrying vertical routes down the field while the underneath defenders (both purple flat zones, both hash zones) sink to their landmarks and mirror any crossers entering their zone. This is a zone beater against man concepts and a solid check against quick game since the underneath locks discourage short in-cuts and flat routes, with the primary read progression starting deep middle to deep outside before working down to the underneath locked defenders.
Pre-snap, check if the offense is running two receivers to one side, since your lock defenders need to widen and stay square to avoid getting picked on a rub route. Post-snap, key the number two receiver's release; if he pushes vertical immediately, expect a seam or bender that challenges the deep middle third defender. Watch for user controlled receivers working stick and shallow routes underneath, since your locked zone defenders are responsible for matching that motion and jumping the route rather than sitting passively. This shell gets exposed by rub routes and mesh concepts that create natural picks against the man-match locked defenders, so be ready to communicate leverage before the snap. Cover 3 Lock struggles against RPOs that stress the alley defenders, so if you see a run heavy personnel package with a bubble screen tag, be ready to sink linebackers quickly to close throwing lanes.
Call this on early downs when you expect play action or shot plays since the deep three coverage takes away go routes and posts.
Watch the offense's formation strength pre-snap and shift your zones toward the trips or bunch side to prevent a natural throwing lane against your lock defenders.
Hot route the underneath locked defenders to squeeze inside if you see stick or spot concepts, since the natural zone drop can leave a small window in the intermediate middle.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Buzz Match or Cover 3 Cloud on back to back snaps so quarterbacks cannot key the deep three shell from the same pre-snap picture every time.
Use this on third and medium when receivers need to sit down in the intermediate zones, since the locked underneath defenders punish hitch and curl routes that try to settle in their windows.
