Breakdown

Will Blitz 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the 2-4-5 Over Wide Big Nickel package that sends the Will linebacker off the edge while the defense rotates into a three deep, three under shell behind him. The strong safety and one linebacker fill the underneath zones while the corners and free safety hold the deep thirds, giving you five pass rushers without fully exposing the middle of the field. This is a zone based pressure package, not a pure man beater, so your primary read is the quarterback's eyes: key the Will's blitz path to see if the tackle picks him up cleanly, then flow to the underneath defenders to close on any hitch, flat, or drag route trying to sit in the vacated zone.

Defensive Reads

Watch for quick game concepts like slants and hitches that try to beat the blitz before the underneath zones fully rotate, since the sim pressure to zone dropback timing is the main vulnerability Identify empty or spread formations pre-snap, which stress the underneath defenders in space and can expose the seam vacated by the blitzing Will Key the running back's release out of the backfield, since check release protections into the flat can pick off your blitzer or turn into a checkdown that beats the zone shell Watch the tight end or slot receiver working across the field on drag and cross routes, as these attack the exact zone the Will linebacker leaves behind This play struggles against max protect and play action rollouts where the quarterback has time to let deep routes develop against only three deep defenders

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when offenses are still establishing tempo and are less likely to have a hot route dialed up against extra pressure

Check the offensive formation pre-snap for trips or bunch looks to the Will side, since that often signals a route combo designed to attack the blitzer's vacated lane

User the Will linebacker yourself if you want full control over the blitz timing, or spy the quarterback with him against mobile passers who like to escape contain

Pair this with Sam Blitz 3 in your play calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on which side the extra rusher is coming from

Mix in Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 on the following snap to disguise the same shell without bringing the extra rusher, keeping the offense guessing
