Fire Man is a man coverage blitz look out of the Over Wide 2-4-5 Big Nickel package that brings a fire zone style pressure package disguised as man coverage. It pairs five man defenders on the outside skill players with a hot blitz off the edge or interior gap, forcing the quarterback into a quick decision before protection breaks down. The primary read for the defense is to identify the hot receiver or check down first, since the blitz timing depends on beating the tackle and tight end on their initial pass block set before the QB can climb the pocket.
Watch the running back release, if he stays in to chip block the offense expects pressure and may be running a quick game beater Read the offensive line splits pre-snap, wider splits usually mean the offense anticipates an interior blitz and will slide protection accordingly Post-snap, key the tackle to tight end side, if he opens outside immediately the edge rusher has a clean lane to the quarterback This beats teams that run slow developing route combos like deep crossers or double moves since the man defenders stay attached through the break This gets beaten by hot routed slants and quick outs against man coverage, especially if the offense identifies the blitz side and throws away from it before the rush arrives
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a drop back pass so the blitz timing lines up with the offense holding the ball for a full read progression
Check pre-snap for the offense sliding protection toward your blitzer, if they shift the line you may need to send a different rusher with a hot route audible
Use your user controlled defender to spy the running back out of the backfield since man coverage on the back leaves him vulnerable if the blitz does not get home in time
Pair this with Cover 1 Sting Wk and Cover 1 Robber in the same set so the offense sees the same shell pre-snap and cannot key the blitz based on safety depth
Avoid calling this against empty formations with a mobile quarterback since the extra blitzer leaves a lane for scrambles if contain is not respected
