Cover 3 Sim Pressure

Breakdown

Cover 3 Sim Pressure is a defensive call out of the Over Wide 2-4-5 Big Nickel personnel that sends a simulated four man rush while dropping into a three deep, four under zone shell. The sim pressure disguises which two rushers are coming by showing a heavier look pre snap, then dropping a defender who looks like a blitzer into an underneath zone while another rusher loops in from depth. This is a zone beater killer against man concepts and a solid answer to quick game and RPOs since the underneath defenders sit in passing lanes, and the primary read for the defense is the quarterback's eyes and drop, keying the deep middle third safety first before diagnosing the flat and curl defenders.

Defensive Reads

Key the quarterback's pre snap cadence and protection slide to see if he is anticipating pressure, since sim pressure wins big against quarterbacks who hold the ball expecting only a four man rush. Watch the running back's route release, if he chips and stays in to block that confirms the offense sees pressure and is looking to get the ball out quick, so squeeze the flat defenders tighter. Post snap, identify which underneath defender is dropping into the zone versus rushing, then use that defender to jump the nearest crossing route or speedy out before it develops. This call gets exposed against quick game trips concepts and stick nod combinations that attack the seams between the four under zones, so if you see three receivers bunched to one side consider checking to Cover 4 Quarters instead. Man beater route combos like double moves and deep comebacks struggle against this shell since the deep third defenders sit on top, but rub routes and pick concepts can still create separation against the underneath zone defenders if timing is off.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect play action or quick game since the underneath defenders can sit and read the quarterback's eyes.

Disguise the pressure by showing all four rushers crashing the line pre snap, then let the game engine drop the designated zone defender at the snap to bait a hot read throw into a jumping zone defender.

Use the flat zone defender to squat on shallow crossers and speed outs, then user the deep third defender opposite the boundary to protect against go routes on the numbers.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 in the same set so the offense sees a similar shell pre snap but gets a different pressure look, keeping quarterbacks guessing between blitz and standard zone drops.

Avoid calling this against heavy trips or bunch formations since the four under zone can get outnumbered on quick smoke concepts, in those cases lean on Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 6 instead.
