Free Fire 3 is a five man pressure package out of the 2-4-5 Big Nickel look that brings extra heat off the edge while dropping into a three deep zone shell behind it. The blitz sends a linebacker or nickel defender through a gap to disrupt the quarterback's timing while the secondary plays Cover 3 principles with three deep defenders splitting the field and underneath defenders spying shallow crossers and flare routes. The primary read for the defense is to identify the running back or tight end releasing into the shallow zone first, since that is usually the outlet valve against pressure, then work through the deep thirds if the quarterback holds the ball and looks downfield.
Pre-snap, check for the running back's alignment, if he is releasing into the boundary he can beat the underneath zone with a quick option route before the pressure arrives. Identify trips or bunch formations to the play side, since those concepts can overload the underneath zone defenders and create natural picks against man leverage. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap, if he looks to the flat or shallow drag right away he is likely trying to beat the blitz before it gets home. This play struggles against quick game concepts and hot route sight adjustments since the deep zone defenders are outnumbered underneath while pressure develops. It beats slow developing play action and deep shot plays since the extra rusher collapses the pocket before routes fully break, forcing an early or inaccurate throw.
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to take a shot downfield since the pressure disrupts deep drops before routes can develop.
Check the offensive personnel pre-snap, if you see max protect or two backs in the backfield, user the extra blitzer to the weak side since there is likely a hole in protection.
Use the flick up hot route on your zone defenders underneath to widen the shallow drop and squeeze mesh or drag concepts that try to exploit the space vacated by the blitz.
Pair Free Fire 3 with Cover 3 Sim Pressure earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar shell but cannot identify whether the extra rusher is coming until well after the snap.
If the offense starts checking into quick game or hot routes to beat the blitz, mix in Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 to disguise the same look without sending extra pressure, keeping the quarterback guessing.
