Breakdown

Cover 3 Sky is a zone coverage call out of the Over Wide 2-4-5 Big Nickel personnel that drops three deep defenders into thirds while stacking the underneath with four zone defenders and a Sky safety who rolls down into the run fit and curl/flat area. It is a zone beater killer designed to clog underneath crossing routes and hooks while the deep thirds erase go routes and deep outs, and it holds up well against play-action shots because of the single high rotation disguise. Your primary read starts at the strong side curl to flat defender since that Sky safety is the run and pass conflict player, then progress to the middle linebacker's hook drop and finally to the deep third corners if the quarterback is scrambling or the play breaks down.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check safety depth and alignment since a shaded single high look often tips zone coverage before the Sky safety rotates down. Key the curl to flat defender immediately after the snap because if you jump his drop as the user you can undercut quick outs, flat routes, and shallow crosses that are staples against three deep shells. Watch for offenses attacking the deep middle third with skinny posts or deep crossers since the single deep defender in that zone has to cover a large amount of ground and can be stressed by two receivers occupying the same area. This coverage struggles against four vertical stretches and stick nod concepts where receivers settle in the void the underneath zone leaves after the linebackers commit to short drops. It matches up well against man beater route combos like slants and drags because the underneath zone defenders sit in passing lanes, but it can get exposed by RPO run reads if your linebackers crash too fast on run action.

Usage Tips

Show this look on early downs when you want a two high presnap disguise that rotates to single high after the snap to bait quarterbacks into thinking Cover 2 or Cover 4 is coming.

User the Sky safety yourself so you can jump underneath crossers and drag routes that are the primary man beaters teams throw against three deep shells.

Mix this in after calling Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 2 Man from the same set so your presnap alignment looks identical and opponents cannot key on rotation tendencies.

Pair Cover 3 Sky with Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 in your play calling sequence since both disguise similarly presnap but roll coverage responsibilities differently, keeping run and pass reads guessing.

Avoid calling this on third and long against trips or bunch formations since the flat defender can get picked off by natural rub routes, leaving the flat wide open.
