Read the number two receiver's release first, since in quarters coverage the safety's assignment is determined by whether that receiver runs vertical or breaks inside. Watch for four verticals or seam concepts, this shell is built to eliminate deep seam throws and force the quarterback to check down. Identify trips or bunch formations pre-snap, since quarters can get confused by pick routes and rub concepts that create natural picks against man leverage defenders. Key the flat defenders after the snap, if they widen too fast on play action rollouts it opens a soft spot in the intermediate hook zone for smart quarterbacks to exploit.
