Cover 1 Sting Wk is a man free blitz package out of the Over Wide 2-4-5 Big Nickel look, combining single high safety help with a weakside sting blitz sent off the edge. The Mike and a weakside linebacker crash the backfield while the remaining defenders lock into man coverage underneath with a deep free safety playing the middle third as the last line of defense. Primary read for the defense is to time the snap for the sting blitz to beat the offensive tackle off the edge while the corners and nickel defender squeeze their man assignments to take away the quick hot route or check down before the quarterback can reset his eyes to the blitz side.
Pre snap check the offensive tackle to the sting blitz side, if he is uncovered or aligned wide the edge pressure will win quickly against slower dropback protections Identify running backs staying in to chip or scan protection since that removes a receiving threat but also means the sting blitz must win one on one against the tackle Watch the deep middle of the field for any receiver working across the field on a deep crosser, since the single high safety is the only defender who can help over the top This play struggles against quick screens and RPO run reads to the blitz side since the vacated edge gap can be exploited before the blitzer arrives Man coverage underneath is vulnerable to natural picks and rub routes from bunch or stack sets, so if you see stacked receivers presnap consider checking to a zone call like Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 instead
Bring this play out on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to run quick game or shotgun spread concepts since the sting blitz is designed to beat single blocking before protection can slide
User the weakside linebacker on the sting blitz so you control the timing of the edge pressure and can bait the quarterback into a bad throw against the trailing man coverage
Watch for empty or bunch formations that can pick up the sting blitz easily with extra protectors, in those cases check into Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Robber instead for better rat support underneath
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sim Pressure or Fire Man earlier in the series so quarterbacks cannot key blitz tells from personnel or depth alone
Disguise the single high safety look before the snap by mugging the box then backing off late to keep the quarterback guessing between this and Cover 3 Sky
