X Slant out of Weak I Wing shows a quick-hitting three route concept built to get the ball out fast. The X receiver runs the namesake slant across the middle for the primary quick read, while the two outside receivers on the flanks push vertical go routes to clear out cornerbacks and hold the deep safeties. The TE or wing runs a short vertical/seam release into the flat area to give a checkdown against underneath zone drops. This is a man beater at its core, since the slant is designed to win against man leverage with a quick, decisive break, and it doubles as a solid answer versus soft zone thanks to the vertical stretch on the outside.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, a linebacker sitting shallow or crashing downhill on run action can jump the slant route and turn it into a pick six. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a deep middle defender, since those shells can rob the slant if the throw is late or underthrown. Key the flat defender to see if he widens with the vertical routes or stays home to squat on the slant window, this tells you whether the throwing lane is clean. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since this play has minimal pass protection help and a hot blitz can force a rushed throw. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle zone are the biggest threat to this concept, so scan for a defender sitting still near the LOS before committing to the slant read.
Usage Tips
Get the ball out on time to the slant, this play lives and dies on a quick first read and rhythm throw before the pocket collapses.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like tight corner alignment on the outside receivers, since the slant wins hard against man leverage.
If you see two-high safeties sitting deep, trust the vertical routes to hold them and throw the slant into the vacated middle void before the linebacker can sink underneath.
Hot route the backside vertical into a quick out or drag if you are facing a heavy Cover 2 shell to give yourself an extra underneath option against the flat defender.
Pair this play with Post Shot or TE Drag in the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick game and shot plays off similar formation looks.
