HB Gut is a downhill gap run out of the Weak I Wing formation with 22 personnel, using the fullback to lead through the hole for the halfback. The blocking scheme pulls the fullback across the formation to seal the interior gap while the offensive line blocks down, creating a tight run lane between the guard and tackle. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, designed to grind out yardage using gap integrity and lead blocking rather than deception. The primary read for the ball carrier is to press the initial hole, follow the fullback's lead block, and cut off his path based on how the linebackers flow.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for a stacked box with linebackers crashing downhill, this is the look that shuts down HB Gut since it clogs the intended running lane before the fullback can seal it. Look at defensive tackle alignment, a 3-technique or 4i shaded toward the play side gap can blow up the play before the fullback gets there. Watch linebacker depth, if they are sitting at five yards or deeper they have time to read and flow, which forces the runner to cut back rather than hit the called hole. Man beater blitzes with an extra rusher off the edge do not affect this play much since it attacks inside, but a well timed A-gap blitz from the defense can beat the fullback to the point of attack. If the defense shows a heavy or bear front with defenders stacked directly over the guards and center, expect the gut run to get minimal yardage and consider checking to an outside run instead.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when you want to stay ahead of the chains without exposing yourself to negative plays. Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box this play should have a clean lane. Use manual control on the fullback lead blocker to help him identify the correct linebacker to seal, especially against stacked fronts or blitz looks. Pair this with Counter Weak and HB Power O to keep the defense guessing between gap schemes while using the same personnel and formation look. Mix in PA Power O and PA Boot Slide off this same set once the defense starts cheating linebackers downhill to stop the gut run, since the run action will hold them for a beat longer.
