PA Power O is a play-action pass off the Power O run look out of Weak I with the Wing tag, designed to hold linebackers and safeties for a beat before they can drop into their zones. The diagram shows a two-man route combo: the outside receiver runs a deep out breaking hard to the boundary at intermediate depth, while the inside receiver climbs vertically up the seam before bending it toward the corner for an over-the-top shot. The fullback and offensive line sell the power run action to the play side, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his read. Primary progression starts with the deep seam-to-corner route as the first read against single high shells, then comes back down to the breaking out route underneath if the safety stays deep.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacked in the box expecting Power O run, since that usually means single high safety look which favors the deep corner route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they bite hard on the run fake, the intermediate seam window opens up immediately for the quarterback. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender dropping into a lurk spot over the middle, as this can jump the seam route before it breaks outside. Cover 3 with a hard-charging strong safety can blow up the play design if the edge blocker cannot hold the point long enough for the fake to develop. Man coverage on the outside with no safety help over the top gets beat by the corner route, but Cover 2 shells with a deep half safety sitting on that route will take away the primary read and force the checkdown to the underneath out.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to keep the defense honest against the run action from Weak I.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting back, expect the corner route to be capped and prioritize the deep out to the boundary instead.
Hot route the underneath out into a quick hitch or curl against teams that play aggressive man coverage on the outside receiver, since the out can get jumped by a sitting corner in man beater situations.
Sequence this play after calling HB Power O or FB Power a few times so linebackers start flowing hard on run action, which opens up the vertical seam route for a big play down the field.
Use play-action rollouts like PA Boot Slide from this same set as a changeup so defenses cannot key on your run action tendencies out of Weak I Wing.
