Post Shot out of Weak I Wing (22 personnel) is a shot play built to attack deep down the middle of the field. The outside receiver runs a deep post, splitting the safeties and hunting for a big play, while the slot receiver runs a corner route breaking outside and the third receiver runs a deep in/crosser to clear underneath zones and occupy the middle linebacker. This is a man beater designed to isolate the post runner on a single defender, with the corner route acting as a coverage stretch against two high safety shells. Primary read is the post first, working outside to the corner route if the post is capped by a safety over the top.
Pre snap, identify the safety alignment first, a single high safety means the post has a one on one matchup and should be your first target. Watch the cornerback over the post receiver, if he is playing with inside leverage or shows man technique at the line, trust the post to win. Post snap, key the free safety's initial drop, if he flies over the top toward the post route you must reset to the corner route breaking outside. Look for a hard closing linebacker or nickel defender sitting under the crosser, that route is a decoy against zone unless the middle is wide open. This play struggles against two high shells with disciplined safeties who stay deep and against zone blitzes that get an extra rusher home before the post route develops.
Call this on early downs or in shot play sequences when you have already established the run game from Weak I to hold the safeties. Check pre snap for single high versus two high safety alignment, single high is your green light to fire the post immediately off the snap. Motion or shift the slot receiver before the snap to confirm man coverage, if the defender follows the motion it is man and the post has a strong chance to win. Use the corner route as your outlet if the free safety rotates over the top of the post, this stretches the deep half and forces a defender to choose. Pair this with HB Power O or FB Power from the same formation and personnel to keep the defense honest on run fits before hitting them with this shot play on second and short.
