TE Drag out of Weak I Wing (22 personnel) shows a classic drag concept designed to attack man and zone coverage underneath. The tight end runs the drag route across the field from the wing alignment, crossing the formation at a shallow depth while the flanker on the boundary runs a deep comeback/out breaking route and the backside receiver clears vertically up the seam. The fullback releases out of the backfield on a shallow curl into the flat, giving the quarterback a checkdown option if the drag is taken away. The primary read progresses from the drag route first, working outside to the comeback route, and finally down to the fullback in the flat as the outlet.
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties which usually signals zone coverage that leaves the shallow drag and flat routes exposed underneath. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into zone drops the drag route will sit in the window between the second and third level. User the middle linebacker or a lurk defender to jump the drag route timing since it is the first and most obvious read for the quarterback. Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is the biggest vulnerability, so disguise blitzes or bring a spy to threaten the quarterback before the drag develops. Watch for the fullback releasing late into the flat as the checkdown, a linebacker sitting outside can bait the quarterback into a low value throw.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm if you are facing man or zone before the snap.
Against man coverage, the drag route creates natural separation off the crossing action, so pull the trigger on it as soon as the tight end clears the opposite hash.
Against zone shells, look to hit the comeback route on the boundary since it sits down in the void behind underslung cornerbacks.
Pair this play with Middle Hooks or PA TE Slide in the same set to keep the defense guessing between shallow crossers and play-action shots off similar formation looks.
Best called on second and short to medium distance where defenses are more likely to sit in zone drops rather than blitz heavy man looks.
