HB Power O out of the Weak I Wing set is a downhill gap scheme run play built to overload the strong side with double lead blockers. The diagram shows the FB kicking out the edge defender while the offensive line pulls the backside guard through the hole, with the HB taking a slight lead step before pressing the point of attack behind the pullers. This is a run play with no route concept shown, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the FB's kick block first, then keying the pulling guard to decide between bending it back inside or bouncing outside if the edge is sealed.
Watch for a stacked box pre-snap with linebackers cheating downhill, since Power O relies on the FB winning his kick block and extra defenders in the box can outnumber the blocking scheme Look at the strong side defensive end and outside linebacker alignment, if they are squeezed inside hard they can blow up the FB's kick block and force a negative play Post-snap, key the pulling guard's path, if a user-controlled defender reads the pull quickly and fills the hole before the FB gets there the play dies immediately Cover 1 and Cover 3 with an aggressive strong safety crashing down in run support are tough on this play since it removes the extra gap advantage the scheme needs Nickel and dime sub packages with lighter boxes are where this run hits best since fewer bodies means the double lead blocks can spring the HB into the second level
Pre-snap, check the box count and look for an extra run defender crashing down before the snap since Power O needs a numbers advantage at the point of attack
Use this on early downs (1st and 2nd) or short yardage third downs where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages
If you see the defense stacked with 8 in the box, hot route the FB to adjust his kick angle or motion out of Weak I into a different personnel look before committing to the run
Pair HB Power O with PA Power O in the same set so the linebackers who key run fits get frozen by the fake, opening up throwing lanes off the identical backfield action
Vary tempo by mixing this with HB Gut and Counter Weak from the same formation so defenders cannot sit on one gap or one blocking scheme all game
