FB Power out of the Wing Weak I is a downhill gap run that pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole while the fullback leads through the point of attack. The diagram shows the halfback aligned behind the fullback in a traditional I look, with the fullback kicking out and the halfback following his lead block through the designated gap. This is a pure run play with no route combos or pre-snap RPO elements, designed to win with numbers at the point of attack rather than deception. The primary read progression starts with the pulling guard and fullback lead block, then bends the run based on which way the fullback's kick out block pushes the edge defender or linebacker.
Key the fullback's release at the snap since his block target tells you which gap the run is designed to hit. Watch for stacked defensive tackles or a 4i technique on the play side since that clogs the pulling guard's path and kills the play in the backfield. Overloaded play side blitzes and edge pressure from a 3-4 outside linebacker can beat this before the fullback gets his kick out block set. Look for safeties cheating down into the box pre-snap since that signals run support that can fill the alley before the halfback breaks through the line. If the defense shows heavy zone with linebackers reading run gaps and flowing fast, this play loses its blocking angles and should be checked to a play action look instead.
Run this behind a strong interior offensive line since the pulling guard needs a clean lane to get to the second level.
Attack base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where the fullback can get a clean kick out block on the play side defensive end or outside linebacker.
Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium distance, to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against pass heavy tendencies.
Pair FB Power with PA Power O and PA Boot Slide from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play action off identical formation and motion looks.
Watch the play side linebacker depth pre-snap. If he is sitting tight to the line, consider bouncing this to Counter Weak instead to hit the backside gap.
