HB Stretch out of Strong I Tight (22 personnel) is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB moving laterally toward the edge before he decides where to plant and cut upfield. The offensive line and TE flow in unison toward the play side, reach blocking defenders to create a cutback lane, while the FB leads through the hole to seal the edge defender or wham a linebacker who flows too fast. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the play side double team or reach block first, then working through the cutback lane if the edge gets sealed too far upfield.
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, if they are aligned wide and crashing down hard off the snap the cutback lane will open behind the double team. Key the flow of the middle linebacker, if he overpursues to the play side sideline the HB should cut inside behind the FB's lead block. Look for a user-controlled defender flying downhill to blow up the stretch, since aggressive edge defenders and blitzing linebackers can string this play out or shut it down entirely if they diagnose it fast. This run struggles against gap-sound run fits with disciplined defensive ends who hold the edge and let linebackers fill gaps, so if you see a base 4-3 or 3-4 front staying square, expect minimal yardage unless the cutback is there. Defenses with fast flowing linebackers who overcommit to the play side are the most vulnerable, so exploit any team consistently sending extra run support toward the strong side.
Run this out of Strong I Tight when you want to test a defense's edge discipline, especially against defenses that load the box with six or seven defenders. Use pre-snap motion or a quick pre-snap read of the defensive ends and outside linebackers to see if they are crashing hard or staying home on contain. If the defense shows a heavy inside shell with safeties crept up, hot route the FB to adjust his block angle toward the most aggressive edge defender. Pair HB Stretch with Power O and Counter Weak from the same formation so the defense cannot sit on outside zone tendencies, since all three plays start with similar initial line movement but attack different gaps. This works best on early downs (1st and 2nd) when you have run-pass balance built into your play calling and want to stay ahead of the sticks.
