HB Crash is a downhill power run out of the Strong I Tight formation with 22 personnel, showing two backs stacked behind the QB and a strong side TE for extra beef at the point of attack. The diagram shows the fullback leading through the hole with the halfback crashing off his block, tagged as Power O and Dive concepts hitting off tackle to the strong side. This is a run play designed to overload the strong side edge, using the FB as a lead blocker while the offensive line seals the interior and TE clears the edge, so the primary read is the FB kickout or lead block, hitting the crease as soon as it opens off tackle.
Defensive Reads
Watch the strong side defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down the line this play can get cut off before the FB gets a clean angle. Key the middle linebacker's depth, if he is sitting shallow expecting run he can beat the FB to the hole and blow up the play behind the line. This run struggles against stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages sent right at the strong side gap. It beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that respect play-action out of Strong I Tight and are playing honest run fits without extra edge pressure. Post-snap, track user-controlled linebackers flowing to the strong side, if they diagnose the FB lead block early and fill the gap themselves the HB has no room and should cut back immediately.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap to check the box count, if the defense stacks 7 or more in the box against 22 personnel, consider bailing to a play-action shot off this same look. Motion is not shown here, but line up in Strong I to bait linebackers into overpursuing the strong side before snapping into HB Crash. This play hits best on second and short or first and ten when defenses expect base run fits and are not selling out with extra DBs. Pair HB Crash with Power O and FB Dive in the same set to keep defenders guessing on strong side gap versus dive, then counter with Counter Weak once they start flowing hard to the play side. Against light boxes, trust the FB lead block and stay patient behind him instead of bouncing outside too early.
