HB Blunt Dive is a downhill run play out of Strong I Tight with 22 personnel, showing a fullback lead blocker and the offensive line blocking down at the point of attack. The diagram shows the HB taking a quick handoff and hitting the hole between the guard and center almost immediately, with the FB leading through the gap to take on the first linebacker. This is a pure run play designed to attack a gap before defenders can flow and fill, so the primary read is simply following the FB's block and reading the initial gap for a crease.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line signal a run blitz that can blow this play up before the FB gets a lead block in. Identify the Mike linebacker's alignment, since a Mike shaded to the play side gap will fill fast and force the HB to cut back. Post-snap, key whether the defensive line is getting penetration; if the interior线 is winning immediately, this play has no answer and should be abandoned for outside runs. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from depth (like a spy linebacker or safety) are the biggest threat to this play since they can beat the FB's block angle. This play struggles against gap-control defenses and stacked fronts, but it beats light boxes and defenses that spread out to cover four or five eligible receivers.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage or 3rd and 1 situations where you just need a quick, decisive gap to convert.
Pre-snap, check the box count and make sure you have a numbers advantage or an even box before snapping it.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill, consider audibling to HB Sweep or HB Stretch to bounce it outside instead.
Pair this play with Power O and Counter Weak in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect multiple gaps and can't just key the dive.
Take control of the FB pre-snap if you want to manually pick the best fill defender, since the CPU blocking can occasionally whiff on the second level linebacker.
