Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked fronts with linebackers playing tight to the line pre-snap, since this indicates the defense is selling out to stop the interior run. FB Dive struggles against gap-sound defensive fronts like a 46 or heavy blitz packages where extra defenders are already positioned in the A and B gaps. Post-snap, key on whether the middle linebacker flows downhill immediately or hesitates, since a slow read from a user-controlled backer creates the running lane this play is designed to exploit. This play beats light boxes and defenses in nickel or dime personnel that are geared to stop the pass, since fewer bodies near the line means bigger creases for the fullback and halfback. Be wary of defenses showing run blitz or crashing edge defenders inside, as this can clog the dive lane before the halfback even gets to the mesh point.
Usage Tips
Use FB Dive on early downs or short yardage situations where you need a quick, low-risk gain against aggressive defensive fronts.
Pre-snap, check the linebacker depth and box count. If the defense stacks the box with 7 or more defenders, consider audibling to a play-action or perimeter run instead.
Pair this play with HB Stretch or HB Sweep in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders honest and prevent them from crashing down on the interior every snap.
Since this is a dive concept with an immediate hit point, snap the ball quickly after your read to avoid giving user-controlled linebackers time to fill the gap.
