Counter Weak out of Strong I Tight is a power run play design that pulls blockers away from the strength of the formation to attack the weak side edge. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down to the play side while the fullback and a puller cross the formation to lead the halfback through the hole, with the counter step creating misdirection for the linebackers before the back cuts upfield. This is a run play built to punish overaggressive run fits and linebackers who bite on the initial counter step, with the primary read being the halfback pressing the line, reading the pulling blockers, and finding the crease off the weak side hip of the down blocks.
Defensive Reads
Key the weak side linebacker and defensive end first since Counter Weak lives or dies on whether they respect the counter step or crash down too fast. If you see a defensive tackle or run stopping blitz aligned to the weak side pre-snap, this play can get blown up before the pullers arrive so consider checking to a different run. Watch for user controlled linebackers flowing hard to the strong side initially, that flash of hesitation is exactly what Counter Weak is designed to punish with the misdirection. Defenses that stay disciplined with linebackers reading the fullback and puller rather than the initial back flow will close the weak side lane quickly. Heavy blitz packages sent from the weak side edge can beat this play outright since the design needs time for the pullers to get around and seal the edge.
Usage Tips
Use Counter Weak on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are still playing base run fits and have not started keying your counter action. Watch for linebackers cheating hard to the strong side pre-snap since Counter Weak exploits that lean by hitting the weak side with numbers. Pair this play with Power O and HB Sweep from the same set so the defense cannot sit on one run direction, forcing linebackers to respect both the strong and weak side attacks. If the defense shows a stacked box with eight or nine defenders, check to PA Power O or PA TE Cross to make them pay for crashing down. Let the counter action fully develop before pressing the hole with the halfback, patience is what makes this play hit for explosive gains against aggressive defenses.
