Breakdown

Power O out of Strong I Tight is a downhill gap scheme run play with the fullback leading through the hole and the play side guard or tackle pulling to kick out the edge defender. The diagram shows the HB taking a hard angle toward the strong side gap behind the FB lead blocker, with the offensive line covering the base blocking assignments up front. This is a run play designed to overload the play side with double team blocks at the point of attack, and the primary read is to press the hole and follow the pulling blocker, bouncing outside if the alley is jammed.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked box fronts with the strong side safety creeping down, this signals the defense is selling out to stop the power run and Power O will struggle without a cutback lane. Man beater is not the concern here, focus instead on gap integrity, if the defensive line is slanting away from the play call this can bounce for a big gain outside. Look for a Mike linebacker blitzing through the strong side A or B gap, if he is unblocked the pulling lineman must adjust his angle or the play dies immediately. Zone defenses with light boxes are the best matchup for Power O since the lead blocker only has to handle one true threat at the point of attack. Post snap, key the strong side outside linebacker or edge defender, if he crashes down hard the FB should have him locked up, leaving a natural cutback lane for the HB.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Strong I Tight on early downs when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the strong side edge.

Check the defensive front pre-snap for a 6th man in the box, if the safety is stacked over the strong side tackle audible to a weak side run or play-action to avoid getting outnumbered.

Use the pulling blocker as your key, delay the handoff slightly if the box is loaded so the puller can climb into the second level cleanly.

Pair this with PA Power O and PA TE Cross off the same look to keep linebackers honest once you have hit Power O a few times in a drive.

Ideal in short yardage and 2nd and short situations where you need a physical, controlled gain rather than an explosive play.
