HB Toss out of Singleback Deuce 12 personnel is a pure run play that tosses the ball quickly to the HB, who attacks the edge behind his blocking numbers rather than hitting downhill. The diagram shows the offensive line and both TEs releasing laterally to set an outside blocking wall, with the HB taking a wide path toward the flank to let the edge blocks develop before turning the corner. This is a perimeter run designed to beat overaggressive interior fronts and gap-shooting linebackers, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since there is no route concept, just an outside zone toss look. The primary read is the HB's bounce-or-bend decision: press the edge blocks and decide whether to cut upfield off the lead blocker or bounce further outside based on how the flow defenders react.
Key the play-side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap. Wide alignment or contain responsibility on that side signals the toss will struggle to get outside. Watch linebacker depth and flow. Linebackers reading run fast and flowing hard to the play side will close the alley before the HB can turn the corner. Identify user-controlled defenders spying the backfield. A user flowing outside immediately at the snap can blow up the toss before the edge blocks set. This run struggles against defenses with a strong edge-set or contain rush package, since those defenders funnel the HB back inside into pursuit. It beats fronts that overcommit to interior gaps, like heavy blitz packages or aggressive gap-shoot defensive lines, since the toss action pulls those defenders away from the eventual edge.
Call this play when the defense shows a stacked box with linebackers crashing downhill, since the toss action gets the ball to the perimeter before fast-flowing defenders can rally.
Use it on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your inside run game.
Pair it with HB Dive and Power O from the same set so the defense has to respect both the interior downhill run and the outside toss, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Watch the play-side defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap. If they are crashing hard inside or blitzing off the edge, this toss can turn the corner for a big gain before support arrives.
Avoid calling this into heavy edge-set fronts or when the defense has extra defenders walked out wide, since the lack of a lead blocker beyond the OL and TEs makes it vulnerable to fast pursuit from the perimeter.
