The primary progression starts with the deep corner route to see if the safety bites, then works down to the flat or hitch underneath if the corner sinks with the vertical threat.
Defensive Reads
Read the flat defender first: if he jumps the underneath route immediately at the snap, that confirms man coverage or a Cover 3 sky look, so climb the corner route right away. Watch the deep safety on the play side: in true Cover 2 he will widen to help on the corner route, which opens a throwing window underneath for the hitch or flat. Identify user controlled defenders sitting in the flat or lurking in the intermediate zone, since a smart user player can rob the flat route and bait the quarterback into a turnover. Against Cover 3, the corner route often runs into the deep third defender, so this play loses value unless the offense hot routes it into a deeper comeback or fade. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can collapse the pocket before the corner route matures, so check protection and slide the tight end or HB to the pressure side pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Call this on third and medium or third and long when you expect a Cover 2 shell, since the smash concept is designed specifically to punish that coverage.
Check the safety depth pre-snap: if both safeties sit deep at range, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 and prioritize the corner route on the snap.
Use a hot route to convert the underneath flat into a quick out or speed out against man coverage if you see the corner pressed at the line.
Pair HB Smash with Curl Flats or Quick Slants in the same set to keep the defense honest, since those plays attack the shorter middle zones that Smash leaves alone.
Combine HB Smash with PA Boot Slide or PA Pats Boot as a play-action sequence, since the run action from the same formation freezes linebackers and opens the corner route lane even wider.
