Breakdown

PA Power O out of Singleback Deuce (12 personnel) sells the Power O run action before releasing three routes into a play-action pass shell. The backside TE runs a deep corner route as the primary read, the play side TE works a shallow crosser underneath, and the outside receiver runs a deep out that stretches the boundary. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish run-heavy defensive keys and linebackers who step up on the power fake, with the deep corner route serving as the first read against man coverage and the underneath crosser working as the zone beater checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Key the linebackers immediately after the snap, if they step up hard to fill run gaps on the power fake, the crosser and corner route both should have room to work. Watch the play side safety pre-snap, if he is sitting at depth over the slot or TE alignment he is likely reading the corner route and can jump it in man coverage. Identify Cover 3 versus Cover 4 shells before the snap, Cover 3 leaves the deep corner route vulnerable to a single deep defender while Cover 4 shells will have two defenders capable of squeezing that route. Beware of a user controlled safety sitting in the deep third or playing lurk over the crosser, since a heads up defender can jump the shallow crossing route if the quarterback stares it down too long. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes where the linebacker assigned to spy or blitz off the edge disrupts the play action fake before the routes develop, so avoid calling it against known blitz-heavy tendencies without a hot route adjustment on the backside protection.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you have already established Power O or HB Dive from this same set to get linebackers and safeties biting on run action.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties rotate down after the snap that is your cue the corner route has one on one leverage.

Use the play action rollout timing to your advantage by holding the ball an extra beat, letting the corner route clear the flat defender before you pull the trigger.

Hot route the shallow crosser into a deeper dig if you are facing a Cover 3 shell, since the crosser naturally sits in the same window linebackers use to rob shallow zones.

Sequence this play after running Power O and Counter Y a few times in the same drive so linebackers start crashing downhill, then hit this shot play off the identical run fake for a big explosive gain.
