Breakdown

Power O out of Singleback Deuce is a classic gap scheme run play built with 12 personnel to give you extra beef at the point of attack. The diagram shows the fullback or backside guard pulling across the formation to lead through the hole while the offensive line down blocks to seal the play side gap, with the HB taking the handoff and pressing the line of scrimmage before cutting off the puller. This is a pure run play with no route concept to read, so the primary progression is a pre-snap and post-snap gap read: press the hole, follow the pulling blocker's shoulder, and cut off his block into daylight.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count, Power O struggles against stacked fronts with an extra safety cheating down into the box. Look at linebacker depth, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow and reading run keys immediately, expect quick downhill fills that can blow up the pulling lane. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and any user-controlled defender shooting the backside gap, since gap exchange or a hard crash can disrupt the blocking scheme. This run beats light boxes and zone-heavy fronts that are slow to diagnose gap schemes, but it gets shut down by disciplined 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers reading pulling guards. Watch for a spy or a user defender staying home in the backside gap, since that defender can chase down cutback lanes if your HB tries to bounce the run outside.

Usage Tips

Use Power O on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when you want to establish tempo and stack the box against light fronts.

Check the defensive alignment pre-snap and if you see a heavy box with 8 or more defenders crashing down, consider audibling to a bounce out concept or motioning the TE to adjust the edge.

Manually control the pulling blocker if you want extra control over sealing off the first defender in the hole, this gives you more consistent movement against user blitzers.

Pair Power O with PA Power O and Counter Y in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the downhill run action and the counter misdirection off the same look.

Against aggressive user linebackers who key the mesh point, use a stutter step post-snap before committing to the hole to bait early flow and then cut backside.
