Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of Singleback Deuce with 12 personnel, showing both TEs attached in-line for double surfaces support. The diagram shows the HB aligned slightly offset behind the QB, taking the zone handoff and reading the play side gaps as the line executes a zone blocking scheme, with the offensive line flowing in unison to create combo blocks and seal running lanes. There is no route concept shown here since this is a straight run play, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the frontside double team at the point of attack before working through his zone landmarks (bang, bend, or bounce) based on how the defensive front flows.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the strength call of the defensive front and whether the Mike linebacker is stacked over the play side guard, since a heavy front can clog the interior zone lanes. Watch safety depth before the snap. A safety creeping down into the box signals run support and should push you toward the cutback lane away from the extra defender. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and 3-technique to see if they are getting reached or if they are penetrating and disrupting the zone combo blocks up front. This play struggles against odd fronts with a true nose tackle and stacked linebackers who can two-gap and clog running lanes, so expect low yardage if the defense shows a 3-4 look with disciplined gap integrity. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill at the snap, since a well-timed cutback away from that flow can turn this into an explosive gain if the backside is unblocked.
Usage Tips
Run this out of 12 personnel to bait base fronts and heavier boxes, then use the threat of Inside Zone Split to set up PA Boot Slide or PA Boot Roll off the same look.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box on early downs, consider audibling to HB Toss or Power O instead since the numbers favor the defense.
Use manual motion or a quick shift to identify if the defense is running a run blitz or crashing the edge, since Inside Zone Split loses value against aggressive gap shooters unless you bounce it outside.

Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want positive, controlled yardage without exposing the QB to a passing down blitz look.
