Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single-high safety alignment because that tells you the post routes have a numbers advantage over the deep defender. Watch cornerback press alignment on the outside receivers; off coverage gives easier releases into the post break, while press coverage can disrupt timing. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop depth since a shallow drop opens the seam throw to the backfield route. Identify user-controlled safeties who might lurk the post route and undercut the throw, especially in Cover 1 robber looks. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a hard flat corner and a deep-drop free safety, since both post routes can be squeezed by inside leverage from the corners and safety help over the top.
Usage Tips
Check the safety count before the snap because this play thrives against one-high shells like Cover 1 and Cover 3 where the post routes can split the safety and exploit the seam.
Use motion across the formation to identify man coverage; if the defender follows the motion man, trust the post routes to win on their break.
Hot route the underneath drag into a quicker option on third and short so you have a rhythm throw ready if the posts are blanketed downfield.
Pair this play with PA Boot Roll or PA Boot Slide in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both look similar off play action but attack different levels of the field.
Against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4, look to sit the backfield seam route in the honey hole between the linebackers and safeties instead of forcing the post throw.
