Counter Y out of Singleback Deuce is a gap scheme run play built off 12 personnel with both tight ends attached to create extra double team surfaces at the point of attack. The diagram shows the HB taking a counter step away from the play call before redirecting downhill behind the pulling blockers, with the offensive line down blocking to seal the play side while the backside guard and tackle or fullback (in this Y variant, the Y tight end) wrap around to lead through the hole. This is a pure run play with no route concept to read, so the primary read progression is the HB reading the puller's block on the play side linebacker first, then bending back to the cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Play side defensive end and outside linebacker are the first keys, if they sit and read instead of crashing hard they can blow up the counter step before the puller gets there. Watch for scrape exchange linebackers who diagnose counter action and fill the cutback lane, this is the primary defense that shuts down Counter Y. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety often means an extra run defender crashing down which favors the cutback if the play side gets sealed. Post-snap, key the backside linebacker's pursuit angle, if he overruns the play flow the cutback lane opens up behind the puller. Aggressive user blitzers shooting inside A or B gaps can beat this play before the double teams set, so be ready to bail to a quick game answer if you see a heavy interior blitz look pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs, first or second and short to medium, to keep the defense honest against your play action shots out of the same 12 personnel look.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box with no extra safety help, counter run away from overloaded fronts.
Watch linebacker depth. If the Mike and Will are sitting shallow and flowing hard to the flow key, the misdirection step in Counter Y should hold them long enough for the puller to seal the edge.
Pair this with PA Power O and PA Boot Slide from the same Deuce formation since the run action and blocking flow look identical, forcing linebackers to freeze and creating explosive shots off play action.
Avoid calling this against fast flow defensive tackle alignments or heavy 4i techniques since the counter step can get blown up before the puller arrives, use HB Dive or Inside Zone Split instead in those fronts.
