X Iso Poco isolates the X receiver on a poco route (a short, angled breaking route) against man or off coverage while the Wing Trips WK Nasty Mug alignment occupies the defense with trips to the other side. This is a man beater at its core, designed to give the X receiver a clean release and separation on his angle break, with the mugged look at the second level hinting pressure to influence the coverage shell before the snap. The primary read progression starts with the isolated X receiver on the poco break, then works to the trips side if the defense rolls extra help toward the isolation route.
Watch the cornerback over the isolated X receiver, if he is playing off with a cushion he is reading zone and you should look to the trips side sooner. Key the safety rotation after the snap, a two high shell that stays two high usually signals the isolation route will not get top down help, so throw with anticipation on the break. Identify any user-controlled defender flashing down near the line at the mug point, since that is the biggest threat to disrupt the timing of the poco route with a delayed blitz or spy. Against man coverage with press at the line, expect the X receiver to need extra separation off the release, so be ready to move the pocket or use pump fakes if he cannot cleanly beat his man. Zone coverage with a robber underneath in the middle of the field is the primary counter to this play, since the poco break settles into a shallow area that the robber can jump if he reads your eyes early.
Check the pre-snap alignment on the isolated X receiver's cornerback before the snap, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top this play is money.
Use the mugged look at the line to bait the defense into thinking blitz, then hot route the trips side into a quick hitter if the linebackers show blitz and vacate their zone drops.
Best called on third and short to third and medium, since the poco break gets vertical separation quickly without needing a deep developing route.
Pair this with Wing Trips WK Nasty Goose in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the mugged look as a blitz-only tell, forcing them to respect both the pressure look and the straight dropback pass.
If the CPU or opponent shows a hard roll to the isolation side pre-snap, audible into Flood or Dash Flood from this same set to attack the vacated space.
