Breakdown

Go's Slot Cross is a man beater built out of the Shotgun Wing Trips WK Nasty Mug set, using a go route from the outside receiver to clear the corner while the slot receiver works a crossing route underneath to attack the vacated middle of the field. The Nasty Mug front adds pre-snap mug pressure disguise, forcing the defense to declare blitz or bail, which opens throwing lanes for the crosser against man coverage or banjo matchups. Primary read progression starts with the go route on a one-on-one outside shell, then works down to the slot cross as the underneath answer if the deep shot is not there, with the running back as a checkdown against pressure looks.

Defensive Reads

Watch cornerback depth at the snap, if the outside corner presses hard on the trips side receiver, that tells you man coverage and the go route has a chance to win on a double move or straight speed release. Key the linebacker depth in the Mug front, a shallow mugged linebacker signals blitz intent, and you should be ready to check into the running back hot route as your answer. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, single high leaves the deep sideline vulnerable to the go route while two high forces you to live and die with the slot cross underneath. Post-snap, track for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, a skilled user player will jump the slot cross route so have a plan to throw with anticipation or reset to the checkdown. This play struggles against tight man coverage with safety help over the top, and it can get exposed by a well timed zone blitz that drops a defender directly into the crossing route window.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the trips side, the go route has a live one-on-one shot down the sideline.

Use the Mug front pre-snap to bait the defense into showing blitz, then hot route the running back to a quick out or flat route as a built-in blitz beater if the defense brings extra rushers.

This play hits best on second and long or third and medium when defenses lean on man coverage with a single high safety to jump underneath routes.

Pair this with Drive Slot Wheel or Mesh Y Wheel earlier in a series so defenders start biting on wheel and drive concepts, then come back to Go's Slot Cross to hit the go route deep once corners start sitting on shorter routes.

If the defense shows two high safeties, user the slot cross receiver manually since the crosser becomes the higher percentage throw against soft zone shells.
