Dash Flood

Breakdown

Dash Flood is a zone beater built off the Shotgun Wing Trips WK Nasty Mug set that attacks one side of the field with a three level flood concept. The design stacks a deep route, an intermediate breaking route, and a shallow flat route into the same vertical stretch, forcing a single defender to declare against multiple levels at once. Primary progression starts with the deep flood route to see if the safety bites, then works down to the intermediate crosser or dig, and settles on the flat route as the checkdown or the throw against a hard sit-down zone underneath.

Defensive Reads

Look for the safety alignment before the snap, since a single high safety pulled toward the flood side signals man coverage or Cover 3, while a two high shell often means the flood side is manned by a cornerback and a flat defender in zone drops. Post-snap, watch the flat defender first, since if he sinks with the deep route you throw underneath immediately, and if he jumps the flat route you attack the intermediate window behind him. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep defenders tend to shut down the deep flood route, so be ready to check down quickly rather than force a low percentage deep shot. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow flat area, since a smart user will sit on the underneath route and bait the quick throw, so patience on the intermediate read punishes aggressive user lurks. Blitz heavy Mug fronts can create one on one opportunities on the flood side if the protection holds, so identify pre-snap whether the defense is bringing extra rushers off the edge and adjust your protection or hot route the running back into a check release if needed.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a two high shell or a single high safety, since Dash Flood is most effective when you can flood one side against a defender who has to cover multiple levels alone. Use motion or a hot route to check the backside receiver into a quick option route if the defense shows man coverage across the board, since flood concepts lose value against tight man coverage without a hot adjustment. This play hits best on second and medium or third and short to medium, where the underneath flat route becomes a high percentage conversion throw if the deep shot is not there. Pair Dash Flood with Flood or Curl Flat from this same set to keep the defense guessing between full field flood reads and quick underneath combos, forcing linebackers to stay honest instead of jumping routes. Against teams that like to disguise coverage, snap the ball quickly off a hard count read to catch the defense before the rotation settles, since the three level stretch punishes late rotating zones the most.
