Dash Corner Up out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK Nasty Mug is a dash-based play-action style dropback concept built to attack the deep outside quarter of the field with a corner route while stacking a vertical up route underneath or alongside it as the second read. The Wing Trips WK alignment gives you a natural three-level stretch, so the corner route occupies the deep defender while the up route works to stress a safety or nickel defender who has to choose between staying deep or jumping the underneath window. This is primarily a man beater against man coverage since the corner and up combo creates a natural high low pick situation, but it also punishes single high zone shells if the flat defender bites on the run action, with the primary read progression going corner first, then up route, then working back to any check down or drag underneath.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, since a single high safety cheating toward the trips side signals a rotation that can jump the corner route late. Look at the corner across from the trips side, if he is playing off man or soft zone you have an easy window for the corner route breaking to the boundary. Post-snap, key the flat or curl defender underneath, if he sinks with the corner route instead of staying flat, that opens the up route sitting behind him. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle who can jump a late up route throw, so do not float the ball late in the progression. This play struggles against a two high shell with disciplined deep half defenders and against a nickel blitz that brings extra pressure before the corner route can fully develop, so have a quick check down or an audible ready if you see six or more defenders showing blitz.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to confirm if the defense is showing man or zone before the snap, since this play lives and dies on getting a clean release on the corner route. Against man coverage, throw the corner route with anticipation as soon as the receiver clears the numbers, especially versus press man where the up route can be hot routed to a slant or drag to give a faster answer against aggressive corners. If you see two high safeties, prioritize the up route since the corner route into a deep half defender can get squeezed by a rotating safety. This play pairs well with Quick Unders or Stick out of the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter combos, then come back to Dash Corner Up once the defense starts jumping underneath routes. Best used on second and long or third and medium to long when you need an explosive play, and avoid it on third and short since the deep timing routes take too long to develop.
