Cross X Burst is a man beater out of the Shotgun Wing Trips WK Nasty Mug set, built around a deep crossing route from the X receiver combined with a burst release from the slot to stress zone leverage horizontally and vertically at the same time. The trips side occupies underneath defenders while the X cross works across the field to create natural rub separation against man coverage, and the burst route attacks the vacated zone if the defense drops into coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2. The primary read progression starts with the deep cross coming from the trips side, then works to the burst route in the void created behind the second level, and finally checks down to the wing back or WK for a safety valve underneath.
Pre-snap, identify if the slot cornerback is playing outside shade or inside shade, since inside shade signals potential man coverage that lets the cross work into open grass. Post-snap, watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, as this is the primary threat that can undercut the deep cross before it clears the linebacker level. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender will squeeze the burst route, so be ready to reset to the checkdown if you see the corner sink into the flat immediately at the snap. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will collapse the pocket quickly, so key on late-arriving pressure and get through your first read fast or throw the checkdown before the cross even breaks. Against Cover 2, the safety rotation to the trips side determines whether the cross or the burst route has priority, so track the safety's first two steps after the snap to decide your throw.
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the trips receivers, since the crossing route thrives off natural picks against man defenders trailing across the field.
If the defense shows a two high shell, prioritize the burst route into the seam or flat void before the cross fully develops, since zone defenders will sink and take away the crosser late.
Use hot routes to convert the checkdown into a flat route against blitz-heavy fronts, giving your quarterback an outlet if the deep cross gets jumped by a lurking linebacker.
Pair this play with Slot Cross or Go's Slot Cross earlier in a drive to condition the defense to bite on shallow crossing action, then hit Cross X Burst for the explosive play once safeties start cheating up.
This play works best on second and medium to second and long situations where you have room to let the deep cross fully develop before checking down.
