Quick Unders out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK Nasty Mug is a timing based passing concept built around short and intermediate underneath routes designed to attack the space in front of zone defenders and beat man coverage with quick separation. The trips side works a combination of a shallow drag, a hitch, and a settling curl or spot route while the backside runs a complementary breaking route to hold the defense honest, giving the quarterback a clear high low read against zone or a rub read against man. This is a true zone beater first and man beater second, with the primary progression starting at the shallow drag or quick out from the trips bunch before working to the underneath curl and finally the backside option if the pocket holds.
Identify the coverage shell before the snap by checking safety depth. Two deep safeties with the Mug front usually means zone underneath, which is exactly what this concept is designed to exploit. Watch the Mike and Sam linebackers at the snap. If they crash downhill on run action or blitz gaps, the shallow drag and curl routes will sit wide open in the vacated middle zone. Key the cornerback over the WK receiver. Press man alignment signals a rub route opportunity, while soft corner alignment at seven or more yards suggests the defense is sitting on the quick underneath throws and baiting an interception. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone or spying the drag route, since a savvy user can jump the primary read and undercut the throw for a pick six. Beware of Cover 2 Man or a disguised blitz from the Mug front, since both can clog the underneath passing lanes and force a hurried throw, so have a checkdown or throwaway plan ready.
Use this play on second and short or third and short situations where defenses expect a run or a conservative call, since the quick unders concept gets the ball out in under two seconds and punishes teams that sit back in zone.
Read the Mug front pre-snap. If both linebackers are stacked at the line showing blitz, hot route your inside receiver into a quick slant or throw to the shallow drag immediately since the underneath zone will be vacated.
Against man coverage, look for the natural rub created by the trips alignment to spring your slot receiver open on the drag, and consider motioning the WK receiver across to create a natural pick before the snap.
Pair this play with Stick or Curl Flat from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick underneath throws and slightly deeper curl flat combos, forcing linebackers to respect multiple depths.
Use Quick Unders early in a drive to set up Four Verticals or Dash Corner Up later, since defenses that bite on the quick underneath routes become vulnerable to double moves and shots over the top.
