Breakdown

RZ Orbit Crossers is a double crosser man beater out of Shotgun Wing Trio with an orbit motion tag that shifts a wing player across the backfield before the snap to help diagnose man versus zone. Off the snap the two inside receivers run a high low crossing combo (the yellow route settling shallow underneath while the red route works a deeper dig level), the outside X runs a deep comeback along the sideline, and the checkdown release out of the backfield flattens to the flat opposite the crossers for a built in outlet. The blocking picks up in a standard shotgun pass protection, and the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser (red) working to the shallow crosser (yellow) underneath, then resets to the flat route if both crossers are taken away.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap identify if a linebacker or safety walks out to shadow the orbit motion, that is your tell for man coverage and a green light to work the crossers Watch corner alignment on the outside X route, press man on that comeback route signals aggressive man principles across the board while soft cushion suggests zone drops underneath This concept struggles against Cover 3 sink or Cover 4 match because the deep crosser runs into a linebacker spy or safety robber sitting in the middle of the field, so respect a two high shell that stays balanced post snap Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow crosser lane, if the defense drops a spy or rat linebacker into that throwing window bail out to the flat checkdown immediately Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are actually favorable since the crossing routes naturally rub off blitzing linebackers, but if you see a zone blitz disguise with drops underneath, hold the ball an extra beat and trust the deep dig behind the rush

Usage Tips

Use the orbit motion pre-snap to bait linebackers and safeties into showing man coverage, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man and the crossers will pick their assignment

This play thrives in the red zone and on third and medium since the crossing routes create natural rub picks against man defenders and the sit route underneath gives a quick outlet

If you diagnose zone coverage post snap, work the deep crosser into the void behind the linebackers instead of forcing the shallow route into a sinking zone defender

Pair this call with Mesh Spot or Orbit Mesh HB Rail in the same set so defenses cannot key on the crossing action alone, alternating the shallow crosser with a mesh concept keeps linebackers guessing

Hot route the checkdown into a flat or drag if you expect a blitz, giving your quarterback a fast throw away from the crossing traffic when protection breaks down
