Breakdown

RPO Peek Y Pop out of Shotgun Wing Trio shows the run action to the backfield with the O-line and TE at the line selling inside zone, while the Y (tight end) runs a vertical pop route straight up the seam off the run fake. The slot receiver runs a short out breaking away from the play, giving the quarterback a quick peek option, and the outside WR runs a shallow drag underneath while the offense reads the box count and second-level defenders. This is an RPO built to attack light boxes and man coverage, with the primary read being the box defender count pre-snap and the Y pop route as the first post-snap pass read if the linebacker bites on the run action.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage, a single high safety cheating toward the box signals man coverage underneath and makes the Y pop route a strong man beater against a linebacker or nickel defender. Watch for linebacker run blitz keys, if the backers crash down hard at the snap the quarterback should immediately pull and throw the pop route before the seam closes. Two-high safety shells with disciplined linebackers who sit at their run fit depth will take away the seam throw and force the offense into the actual handoff. User-controlled defenders sitting in a lurk spot over the middle can jump the Y pop route, so watch for a spy or rat linebacker hanging in the throwing lane before committing to the pass side. Man coverage on the outside receiver leaves the shallow drag open late as a checkdown if the primary seam read is covered, so track the corner's man leverage on that route as a secondary key.

Usage Tips

Count the box defenders before the snap, if there are six or fewer in the box, hand it off on the zone run, if there is a seventh defender crashing down, pull the RPO and go straight to the Y pop read.

Watch the middle linebacker depth and flow at the snap, if he steps up on the run fake the seam is wide open for the pop route.

Use this play on early downs like first or second and medium to stay balanced and keep the defense guessing between run and pass without tipping your hand.

Pair this with Inside Zone and GT Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect the same run action every snap, making the pop route hit even harder when they sell out on run fits.

Hot route the shallow drag into a deeper crosser against zone shells if you need a secondary answer versus a two-high safety look that takes away the seam.
