RPO Zone Peek is an RPO built off an inside zone run look out of Shotgun Wing Trio with 11 personnel. The offensive line executes the zone blocking scheme while the QB reads the second level, with the backside WR running a deep crosser away from the play and the TE peeking a shallow drag underneath as the throw option, while the wing back releases vertically as a checkdown/keep-alive read. Primary progression is run first, then peek the crosser if the second-level defender bites on the run action, and the drag underneath as the emergency throw against overplayed run fits.
Watch the linebacker flow post-snap, if they crash hard toward the run action the crosser will be wide open behind them. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers in their run fit lanes while still dropping into passing zones. Man coverage with an aggressive underneath defender jumping the TE's drag route can blow this up if the QB locks onto that read. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that's the primary counter to the crosser and drag combo. Deep safety alignment matters less here since this is designed to win underneath and at the second level, so focus on box count and linebacker depth instead.
Key the linebacker depth pre-snap, if the second level is sitting tight to the box you have a green light to pull and throw the deep crosser immediately.
Use the wing back's vertical release as a hot route into a quick out or flat route against man coverage to give yourself a safety valve if the crosser is covered.
This play hits hardest on run-heavy downs like 2nd and short or 1st and 10 when defenses are cheating up to stop the zone run.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Mid Zone earlier in a drive so defenders start keying run fits, then punish that aggression with the peek throw on this RPO.
Combine with RPO Peek Y Pop or Orbit RPO Peek Y Flat in the same set to keep the defense guessing on which peek route you're hitting off similar run action.
