PA X Corner is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Wing Trio with 11 personnel that opens with a run-fake before the QB works a vertical shot on the outside. The X receiver runs a corner route from the boundary, the Y at the top of the diagram breaks off a corner/post out of the slot for a stretch on that side, the H runs a quick out/flat toward the sideline underneath, and the F in the backfield crosses the field on a shallow drag while the last receiver chips in and releases on a short hitch. The blocking scheme sets up to sell the run fake up front while the offensive line holds protection, making this a play-action man beater designed to attack the boundary corner one-on-one with the X corner route as the primary read, checking down to the drag or flat if the top is covered.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the corner route more vulnerable to a good throw while Cover 2 and Cover 4 flood that same area with help over the top. Watch the boundary cornerback's leverage: if he is playing outside shade with inside help, the corner route has room to work, but tight coverage with no help invites a contested catch situation. Key the linebacker reaction to the run fake since a disciplined defense that stays home on run action can get depth into the flat and drag routes and take those checkdowns away. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender flying to the flat or drag since that usually signals man coverage is being cheated and the corner route or post should be open. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt timing on the corner route, so if you see pressure showing pre-snap be ready to get the ball out quickly to the shallow drag or flat as a blitz beater.
Use this on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like 2nd and short to keep the run fake believable and freeze linebackers.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see a single high safety shaded to the corner route side, expect trouble and consider hot routing the X to a fade instead.
The drag route from the F is your answer against man coverage and blitzes since it clears low and fast, so use it as a checkdown if the corner window is jumped.
Pair this call with Inside Zone or GT Read Option earlier in a series so linebackers respect the run action and bite on the play fake, opening the corner route.
Against zone coverage look to hit the flat route quickly since it sits underneath and can pick up yardage before the zone defenders rotate over.
