Mtn Drive comes out of Shotgun Wing Trio with 11 personnel and uses pre-snap motion to shift the formation before the snap. Off the snap, the two inside receivers run a classic drive concept, with one man running a deep dig across the middle and the other settling underneath on a shallow crossing route, while the backside receiver runs a deep vertical up the sideline as a clear-out. This is a man beater built on the natural pick created by the drive combo, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser to hold underneath defenders, then works to the dig sitting behind them, with the deep vertical as the low-percentage home run shot if the defense bites on the short stuff.

Defensive Reads

Watch the second level defender assigned to the motion man before the snap, if he trails across the formation you are looking at man coverage and the drive concept has a clean pick opportunity. Key the deep safeties post snap, if they stay high and split the field it confirms a two high shell like Cover 4 or Cover 2 and the dig route becomes the primary window to attack. Beware of Cover 3 sink drops from linebackers, since a linebacker who sinks hard on the shallow crosser can undercut the underneath route and force you to hold the ball longer for the dig to clear. Look for a user controlled linebacker spying the middle of the field, that defender can jump the dig route if he reads your eyes, so use pump fakes or look off the safety before delivering the throw. Man blitzes off the edge are the biggest threat, if you see a nano blitz look pre-snap get the ball out on the shallow crosser immediately since the drive concept does not hold up well against unblocked rushers.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and tells you the drive concept will have room to work underneath.

Attack this on second and medium or third and short to medium since the shallow crosser and dig combo gives you a quick underneath option plus a mid-range answer if the first read is covered.

If you see Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells, trust the dig route to sit down in the soft spot behind the linebackers and in front of the deep safeties, this play is labeled a Cover 4 beater for a reason.

Pair Mtn Drive with Mtn Whip Deep Flood or PA X Corner in the same set so the defense has to respect both the horizontal drive action and the deeper flood or corner shots off similar formation and motion looks.

Hot route the deep vertical receiver into a comeback or hitch against aggressive corners playing press man to give yourself a quicker outlet if the drive routes are jumped underneath.
