Key the underneath linebackers post-snap: if they immediately drop into the mesh crossing lanes, that usually signals zone coverage and you should work the spot route instead of forcing the crossers. Beware of a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone, since this play is vulnerable to a smart user jumping the mesh or spot route if they read your eyes early. A well-timed blitz can disrupt this play before the mesh routes develop, so if you see aggressive linebacker or slot corner blitz alignment pre-snap, consider hot routing the spot route into a quicker option or checking down to the running back.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment or a single high safety shaded to the deep route side, since the mesh crossers thrive against man defenders who have to fight through the traffic.
If you see Cover 3 or a zone shell, immediately shift your eyes to the spot route sitting underneath the shallow zone drop for a quick, safe completion.
Use hot routes to adjust the mesh depth shallower or deeper based on linebacker depth, especially against teams that sit their backers low to jump crossing routes.

On third and medium, this is a great money play because the mesh crossers naturally pick up separation against man to man and the spot route gives you an easy conversion versus zone.
