Mtn Whip Deep Flood is a deep flood concept out of Shotgun Wing Trio designed to stretch the field horizontally and vertically on one side while giving the backside a simple out breaker. The backside X runs a whip route that snaps outside, the slot receiver climbs vertically then breaks up the seam on a whip up route, and the strong side stacks a corner route over a flat route to create a true high low flood on that number. This is a Cover 3 beater at its core, isolating the deep third defender with three levels of stretch while the whip route on the backside punishes man coverage leverage. Primary read progression starts with the flood side deep corner route, works down to the flat, then comes back to the backside whip if the flood side is capped.
Pre-snap, identify the deep safety count and cornerback alignment on the flood side since a single high safety cannot cover both the corner and flat routes without help. Watch for a cornerback playing outside leverage on the flood side, which signals zone drops that can be exploited by throwing the corner route before the safety rotates over. Post-snap, key the flat defender's drop, if he sinks too deep chasing the corner route, the flat route opens up for an easy pitch and catch. Man coverage teams that mirror the whip routes with tight technique will get beat on the initial break, so watch for a defender opening his hips too early. Zone blitz and Cover 3 sky looks with an overhang defender crashing the flat can disrupt the timing of this route combo, so be ready to check down to the backside whip if pressure shows late off the edge.
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since the whip routes create natural separation against man leverage defenders who bite on the initial break. Attack single high safety looks like Cover 3 or Cover 1 since the flood concept overloads one deep third defender and forces an impossible choice between the corner and flat routes. This play works best on second or third and medium situations where you need a chunk gain but still have an easy checkdown if the deep shot is not there. Pair this with Mtn Drive or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and deep shot concepts out of identical formation and motion. If the corner route gets taken away by a deep half safety, work the whip up route on the opposite side since it holds up well against zone drops that widen with the flood.
