Overview

Wide Y Trips WK is a Shotgun trips look that widens the field-side bunchless stack and puts the Y (tight end) as the inside trips receiver, with the weak side isolated to a single split end and the halfback offset next to the quarterback. The "WK" tag matters: the back sets to the weak side, which flips your protection math and gives you a natural checkdown and swing threat away from the trips surface. Compared to standard trips sets in Shotgun where the back aligns strong or the slots are compressed, the extra width on the trips side stretches zone defenders horizontally before the snap and forces the defense to declare rotation early.

The personnel alignment is the real edge here. Having the Y as the number two or three receiver in trips means you are frequently getting a linebacker or a big nickel body walked out over a tight end who can win on option routes, angles, and seam work. Meanwhile the backside X is on an island against whatever corner the defense leaves alone, so any time you see press man with no help over the top you have an immediate isolation throw. The wide split on the trips side also thins the box, which is why the run game in this set (Buck Sweep, Inside Zone, HB Base, Read Option) hits so cleanly against light fronts.

Concept-wise this set covers the full menu. You get true zone beaters in Curls, Stick, and Y Corner, vertical stress with Four Verticals and PA Deep Choice, tight end isolation work with Mtn TE Angle and Shock H Option, screen game with Mtn TE Mid Screen and Mtn HB Swing, and run-pass conflict with RPO Power Peek and PA Read. That mix lets you run the same alignment for an entire drive and force the defense to defend the run, the quick game, the intermediate levels, and the deep shot without ever tipping your hand through personnel changes.

Strengths

  • Four Verticals out of a widened trips set stretches Cover 3 and Cover 4 horizontally before it stretches them vertically, and hot routing the number three receiver to a seam or drag gives you a built-in answer to whichever safety opens his hips first.
  • Stick and Curls give you clean zone beaters that sit in the flat and hook windows, and the backside X on an iso split turns those plays into instant man beaters the moment you read press with no deep help.
  • The Y aligned in trips creates a linebacker or big nickel mismatch on Shock H Option and Mtn TE Angle, which are two of the best user-throw route combos in the game against man coverage and single high shells.
  • The widened trips side pulls defenders out of the box, so Buck Sweep, Inside Zone, and Read Option hit against six man fronts and give you a legitimate run threat from a pass-first alignment.
  • RPO Power Peek and PA Read punish aggressive user linebackers who crash on run action, and the weak side back alignment means your play-action rollouts and swing checkdowns work away from the trips overload.

Weaknesses

  • The weak side back alignment leaves fewer bodies to help on the trips side edge, so overload blitzes and nano pressure off the field side get home before your deeper concepts like Four Verticals or PA Deep Choice can develop.
  • A user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field takes away the number three seam and the tight end angle work, which are the highest value throws in this set, forcing you into low percentage sideline throws.
  • Wide splits telegraph pass tendencies to good opponents, and once they know you are throwing they can drop eight, sit in Cover 3 match, and dare you to check down to Mtn HB Swing all game.
  • Press man across the trips side disrupts the timing on Stick and Curls, and if your slot receivers do not have route running and release ratings to win off the line the quick game dies at the snap.
  • The screen plays (Mtn TE Mid Screen and Mtn HB Swing) are easy for experienced players to read from the alignment, and blitzing directly at the screen side blows them up for a loss.

Usage Tips

Read the alignment over the Y first. If a linebacker walks out over him with no safety help, go straight to Shock H Option or Mtn TE Angle and user throw the break. If a corner travels out there, look backside to the iso X.

On second and medium and third and short, lean on Stick and Curls with a hot routed drag underneath from the backside receiver. That combo defeats both zone spot drops and man coverage without asking your line to hold up long.

Against single high with an aggressive user in the middle, run Four Verticals but hot route the number three to a corner or an out to clear the user out of the seam window, then take the bender behind him.

Mix in Inside Zone and Buck Sweep on early downs when you see six in the box. Establishing the run in this set is what makes RPO Power Peek and PA Read effective later, because it gets the linebackers biting on run action.

Use motion to reset the trips strength when you are unsure of coverage. If defenders follow the motion man across the formation you are seeing man, and that is your cue to call Y Corner or the deep choice concept.

Save Mtn TE Mid Screen and Mtn HB Swing for obvious blitz downs after you have shown drop back pass from this look several times. Calling them early tips the set and lets opponents key the screen.
