Buck Sweep out of Shotgun Wide Y Trips WK is a pure run play that pulls the backside guard and often a tackle or fullback around the edge to lead the HB on a wide sweep. The blocking scheme relies on the pullers turning up at the point of attack to kick out the edge defender and seal the alley, while the play side线 (line) blocks down to create a natural running lane between the tackle box and the sideline. Your primary read is the edge defender and flowing linebackers: if the edge is sealed and the pullers get to the second level clean, follow the lead blocker to the sideline, but if the defense flows hard and fills outside, cut it up behind the pulling linemen for a inside lane.
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap: if they are crashing hard down inside, the sweep has a natural cutback lane once the puller kicks out. Identify the strong safety and cornerback leverage on the trips side, since an overhang defender sitting outside the tackle box can blow up the pulling scheme before it develops. Key the middle linebacker's depth and flow: a linebacker who reads pulling guards quickly and flies to the sideline will erase the edge, so be ready to cut it up inside. This play struggles against stacked eight man fronts and aggressive edge blitzes that shoot upfield before the pullers can get outside, since it removes the lead blocker's angle. Zone coverages with a hard flowing linebacker or a spy tend to shut this down, while single high man coverages with slower reacting linebackers are more vulnerable to the sweep's edge speed.
Use Buck Sweep on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, when the defense shows a light box or single high safety look.
Check the defensive front pre-snap: if you see six or seven in the box with edge defenders crashing hard, consider audibling to Inside Zone or HB Base instead since the pullers will get beat to the edge.
Motion the trips receiver or use a quick pre-snap shift to bait the defense into showing man or zone coverage, which also tips whether extra defenders are cheating into the run fit.
Pair Buck Sweep with PA Deep Choice or PA Read from the same formation to keep defenses honest, since the sweep action sells run and sets up play-action shots off the same pre-snap picture.
Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill, use a stick or cut move at the mesh point to let your pullers get ahead of pursuit before committing to the sideline.
