HB Base out of Shotgun Wide Y Trips WK is a straightforward inside handoff designed to attack the interior gaps behind zone or gap blocking up front. The offensive line steps in unison to seal off the front seven while the HB reads his blockers, looking for a crease between the tackles before bouncing outside if the alley is clogged. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element attached, so the primary read progression starts with the frontside double team or combo block, then works to the backside cutback lane if the defense flows too hard toward the play call side.
Identify the Mike linebacker depth pre-snap, since a shallow Mike who is sitting on the run gap will disrupt the timing of the frontside combo block. Watch for defensive tackles slanting toward the play call side, which signals a run blitz or gap exchange that this play struggles to handle without a cutback lane. Look at the safety alignment for two high shells, since single high safeties often mean an extra run defender is loaded into the box near the line of scrimmage. Key the linebacker flow after the snap, if they overpursue toward the frontside the backside cutback becomes the higher percentage lane for the HB. This play is neutral against man and zone coverage shells since it is a run concept, but it gets shut down hard by aggressive nano blitzes and edge pressure that beat the offensive line off the snap before the blocking scheme can develop.
Use HB Base on early downs when you need to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run before dialing up Four Verticals or PA Deep Choice out of the same Wide Y Trips WK look. Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since it lacks any RPO tag to punish extra defenders in the box. Motion the HB or use a hot route on the trips side receiver to bait linebackers into leaning, which widens the interior running lane. Pair this play with Inside Zone and Buck Sweep in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on gap direction, since all three hit different lanes but start from an identical formation. Avoid calling this against heavy blitz looks with stacked linebackers, since there is no built in adjustment to hot route the protection against extra rushers.
