Stick from Shotgun Wide Y Trips WK is a quick-game passing concept built to attack zone coverage with high-low stress on flat defenders and hook zone linebackers. The trips side runs a stick combination of a flat route, a shallow hitch, and a corner or seam breaker while the backside receiver runs a complementary route to hold the single-side corner honest. Your primary read starts with the stick flat defender: if he sits, throw the hitch sitting behind him, and if he widens to the flat, work the seam or corner route breaking behind him.
Identify the flat defender pre snap and track his depth and width at the snap, if he sinks into the hook zone the flat route is wide open Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the stick window since a good defender will sit on the hitch and bait the throw Check for Cover 3 shells where the corner sits deep, this leaves the flat and stick routes soft and available for an easy completion Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with press corners since the underneath routes get crowded and man coverage can jump the shallow hitch Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, if the protection is not sound get the ball out fast on the shortest route since Stick is designed to be a quick timing throw
Use this play on third and short to third and medium when you expect zone coverage since the stick concept is purpose built to beat Cover 2 and Cover 3 flat defenders
Check the defensive alignment pre snap for two deep safeties, if you see a two high shell this concept has a clean answer against the flat and hook defenders
Hot route the backside single receiver into a quick out or slant if you anticipate man coverage on that side to give yourself a second easy answer
Pair Stick with Curls or Four Verticals in the same set so you can audible between a quick zone beater and a deeper shot play based on the safety rotation you see pre snap
Use play action rollouts or RPO Power Peek from this same formation to keep the defense honest before coming back to Stick on third down when they start selling out on the run
