PA Read out of Shotgun Wide Y Trips WK is a play-action pass that sells the run fake to the backfield before working a half-field flood concept toward the trips side. The offensive line executes run blocking steps to sell inside zone or HB Base, holding linebackers and freeing the intermediate crosser and deep out working behind the play-action rollout look. This is primarily a zone beater, since the flood concept overloads one side and forces a single defender to choose between levels, but it also has man beater traits if the crosser can create natural separation off a linebacker in coverage. The primary read progression starts with the deep route on the trips side to check for a blown coverage shell, then works down to the intermediate crosser as the first checkdown, and finishes with the backside option route or flare as the outlet against pressure.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth: stacked boxes with linebackers crashing downhill confirm the run fake will hold them long enough for the crosser to sit in the vacated zone. Identify the coverage shell before the snap: single high safety shells are vulnerable to the deep route on the trips side since the safety has to respect the run fake momentarily. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot over the middle, since a smart user will jump the intermediate crosser and bait you into an interception. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who do not bite on the run fake will clog the underneath crossing lanes and force you to check down late or take a sack. Watch blitz timing off the edge: if the defense sends a simulated pressure or overload blitz, the play-action drop can be too slow to protect, so be ready to hit the backside option route as a quick escape valve.
Use PA Read on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when the defense is geared up to stop the run based on personnel or box count.
Check the pre-snap safety alignment: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the play-action fake will not fully freeze them, so plan to work the crosser and underneath option instead of forcing the deep shot.
If the defense shows a single high safety or aggressive run blitz look, trust the run fake and expect the intermediate crosser to break open quickly against vacated underneath zones.
Pair this play with Inside Zone or HB Base earlier in a series so the defense commits to stopping the run, then call PA Read to punish overaggressive linebacker fills with the same backfield action.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out against man coverage if you need a fast completion outlet versus a nano blitz or heavy pressure look.
