Y Off Trips Stack is a condensed 3x1 look out of Shotgun that stacks two receivers behind the point man on the trips side while dropping the tight end off the line into an offset alignment behind the tackle. That stack alignment is the whole point: unlike standard Y Off Trips or spread trips sets where all three receivers are split with air between them, the stacked bodies make it nearly impossible for the defense to press cleanly or align inside/outside leverage on the second and third receivers. Man coverage defenders have to work through traffic off the snap, which manufactures free releases without you burning a single motion or hot route.
Personnel is typically a single back, one tight end, and three wideouts, with the Y aligned off the ball rather than attached. That off alignment matters for two reasons. First, it keeps the tight end eligible for quick releases into the flat or on drag concepts without fighting a defensive end. Second, it gives you an extra body in pass protection on the weak side, which matters against edge pressure since the trips side pulls linebackers and safeties away from the box. The isolated single receiver on the backside becomes your read against any single high shell, and you can hot route him on a fade, slant, or comeback depending on the leverage the corner shows.
The play selection here is compact but functional. Deep Stick gives you a stick/dig combination that punishes soft zone and Cover 3 flats. Counter Y is your misdirection run that pulls linemen across formation and uses the off tight end as a lead blocker, forcing linebackers to flow the wrong direction. Curls is a classic West Coast timing concept that sits down in the holes of Cover 2 and Cover 4 while doubling as a man beater when you convert the outside curl to a fade. Between those three plays you have a run, a quick timing pass, and an intermediate zone attack from an identical formation shell, which is exactly what you want for tendency-breaking.
Read the corner leverage on the isolated backside receiver first. If you see outside shade with a single high safety, hot route a slant and take the free completion before working the trips side.
Use Curls on second and medium against soft zone, then run Counter Y from the identical alignment on the next series to punish opponents who start creeping their linebackers into pass drops.
Against press man, do not motion anything. The stack already generates free releases, so let the play art work and read the inside stack receiver breaking away from his defender.
Block your running back or slide protection toward the trips side when you see a linebacker walked up over the stack, since that is your primary overload pressure tell out of this set.
On Deep Stick, hot route the stick receiver to a curl or drag if the flat defender is squatting, which turns the concept into a pure zone beater that sits in the vacated window behind the underneath dropper.
