Deep Stick out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Stack is a Stick concept play built to attack zone coverage with quick, high percentage throws while still keeping a vertical shot available. The trips stack alignment creates natural rub and pick opportunities for the stick routes underneath while the backside receiver runs a deep route to hold the safety and stretch the field vertically. Primary read starts with the stick and flat combo on the trips side, working from the shallow stick to the flat, then coming back to the deep route if the defense sinks its underneath zone drops.
Read the linebacker depth at the snap since shallow drops signal the defense is sitting on the stick route and you should look immediately to the flat or the deep shot. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the underneath zone near the stack since that indicates a jump on the stick route and the flat becomes the answer. Check corner alignment on the backside receiver before the snap, tight press alignment suggests man coverage which favors the natural rub from the stack against the stick concept. Identify Cover 2 shells by safety depth since two deep safeties will squeeze the deep route and force you to live underneath with the stick and flat combo. Look for blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge since Deep Stick's quick stick route gives the quarterback a fast outlet before pressure arrives.
Pre-snap, check the safety alignment to confirm single high or two high before deciding whether to prioritize the stick or the deep shot on the backside.
Use motion or a hot route on the flat defender to create a clean natural pick against man coverage since the stack alignment already gives you a built-in rub.
Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, work the stick to flat progression quickly since the sticks settle in the soft spots between underneath zone defenders.
Call this on early downs to set up Curls from the same set since both plays start with similar stick and hook route looks but attack different depths, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drops.
On third and medium, pair Deep Stick with Counter Y as a play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the run threat out of the same trips stack look.
