Sft Read Option is a run-heavy read option out of Trips X Nasty Offset WK in Shotgun 11 personnel, using pre-snap motion to shift the defense and gain a numbers advantage before the snap. The QB reads the play side defensive end: if the end crashes down on the dive, the QB pulls and attacks the edge, and if the end sits wide or stays home, the QB hands off into the zone blocking scheme up front. This is a true run play with option elements built in rather than a straight dropback pass, so the primary progression is the mesh point read on the edge defender, not a route tree.
Check the defensive end alignment pre-snap, if he is lined up wide and squeezed to take away the pitch, expect him to sit on the mesh read. Look at linebacker depth, stacked and tight linebackers signal a run blitz look that can beat this play if the QB is slow on the mesh decision. Watch for a scrape exchange from the defense where the end and linebacker swap responsibilities, this is designed to confuse the read and force a bad pull or handoff decision. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box favors the QB keeper since the numbers advantage on the edge is real. Zone shells with a safety rotating down into the box as a run fit defender can shut this down, so recognize post-snap rotation quickly and adjust to the dive if the edge is sealed.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety, which tells you whether you are getting a true numbers advantage on the edge.
Watch the play side defensive end during the mesh point, if he sits and squeezes the dive lane, pull the ball and get outside quickly before the backside pursuit closes.
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages.
Pair this with Sft Inside Zone and Sft PA Curl Seam from the same set so defenses cannot key on run versus pass just from personnel or formation.
Against aggressive fronts that crash hard every snap, hold the ball more often since the defensive end will overcommit inside and leave the edge wide open.
