Sft PA Curl Seam is a play-action pass out of the Trips X Nasty Offset WK set that uses motion pre-snap to shift the box and disguise run intent before the quarterback sells a play fake. The route concept pairs a seam route from the inside trips receiver against the curl route breaking underneath it, creating a natural high-low stretch on the hook to curl to flat defenders and on any deep half safety trying to rob the seam. This is a man beater and zone beater hybrid, with the seam winning against man coverage on linebackers and the curl settling into soft spots against zone drops, and the primary read progression starts at the seam for an explosive shot before working down to the curl as the checkdown or rhythm throw.
Pre-snap, check safety alignment first, a single high safety indicates Cover 1 or Cover 3 and tells you the seam route has a clear throwing lane up the middle. Watch the cornerback over the trips side, if he presses or shows outside leverage he is likely in man coverage and the seam will separate quickly once the linebacker gets picked off by traffic. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the seam passing lane instead of stepping up on the play-action fake, that signals a disciplined defense and you should peek at the curl instead. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate seam window, aggressive AI or a smart user linebacker camping that area is the biggest threat to this concept and forces a quicker checkdown read. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties shut this down the fastest since they cap the seam route, so if you see that shell pre-snap plan on the curl or a hot routed flat as your primary answer instead.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation that confirms man coverage and tells you to lock onto the seam route immediately.
Look for single high safety shells before the snap, this play thrives against Cover 3 and Cover 1 because the seam route splits the middle linebacker and the deep safety before either can react.
Hot route the curl into a flat route if you see Cover 2 with two deep safeties sitting on top of the seam, that adjustment gives you a quicker underneath option instead of forcing a throw into the deep middle.
Run this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep defenses honest with the play-action fake, then pair it later with Sft Read Option or Sft Inside Zone from the same set so the run fake carries actual threat and freezes linebackers longer.
Sequence this play after HB Power earlier in a series so defenders start biting on run action, then hit them with the seam shot when they crash down expecting another run play.
